Tinnitus is the perception of sound in the ear or head, not arising from the external environment, from within the body such as vascular sounds, or from auditory hallucinations linked to mental illness. The condition can happen as an isolated idiopathic symptom, or in relation to any type of hearing loss including age-related hearing loss, noise-induced hearing loss, Menière’s disease, or an acoustic neuroma. Tinnitus can have an insidious onset and persist for many years, particularly when associated with a sensorineural hearing loss. Tinnitus can trigger insomnia, an inability to concentrate, and depression.
Acupuncture may help relieve tinnitus by performing on the cochlea, specifically on the contractile activity of outer hair cells; performing on the function of the efferent olivocochlear system to suppress otoacoustic emissions; changing the brain’s chemistry, increasing neuropeptide Y levels, and decreasing serotonin levels; dropping inflammation, by promoting the release of vascular and immunomodulatory actors; rising local microcirculation, which helps dispersal of swelling.
